I used smalti and stone to suggest a cross section of a block of earth with green grass at the top, then brown dirt, and a layer of neutral stone at the bottom. A red, oblong shape is lodged in the center of this mosaic. It is a mystery. Made during the Pandemic, when we all went underground, into hiding, I was working with the idea of digging down and of discovery in the most familiar of places.
