Under Our Thumb

Human greed connects the dots of the crises we are all experiencing, including environmental, social, and medical global catastrophes. The shadow of the climate crisis looms over every aspect of life on our planet, and that shadow is here transformed into the thumbprint pressing down on us, as we and our colonial forbearers have pressed down on Earth's lands, waters, resources and other lives, both human and other. I used green glass for the continents and gray glass for the thumbprint. To slightly accentuate the land I stained the pale blue grout with a lighter shade of green acrylic paint. My goal was for the whole concept of this artwork to emerge for the viewer in two stages: first seeing the thumbprint and only later noticing the land areas.
